How can you stay safe outside this summer?

Summer is coming quickly, and that means you may want to start spending more time outside. Taking walks with your family or exercising outside are great ways to get fresh air and stay active. However, being a pedestrian comes with risks.

Fortunately, there are a variety of tips you can use to keep you and your family safe outdoors this season.

Follow the rules

The first step to staying safe is following all existing traffic rules and other suggestions. This means heed all traffic signs, cross streets in designated crosswalks and use sidewalks where they’re available.

Stay alert

Unfortunately, while you may follow all the rules, you cannot assume other people will. Staying alert can help keep you safe, in case others are not obeying traffic laws.

Carefully check your surroundings before crossing streets and be aware of where all other cars are while walking. You should also avoid using your cell phone, even while walking. Though you may want to listen to music while exercising or walking, try and keep the volume low, or only use one ear bud, so you can stay aware of your surroundings.

Be visible

Making sure cars and other motorists can see you is another good way to keep safe while walking or running near the road. Wearing bright and/or reflective clothes and carrying a light when it is dark can help alert drivers so they can safely avoid your path.

These are just a few tips and tricks you may want to use this summer to stay safe. There are many other ways you can protect yourself as a pedestrian, and take extra caution as a driver. Summertime means fun, but there is no reason it can’t be safe, too.
