Drivers who get behind the wheel after drinking or using drugs is a problem in Las Vegas and across Nevada. Driving under the influence reduces reaction time, impairs judgment, leads to drowsy driving and can cause other risky behaviors. When there is a DUI accident, people can be injured and lose their lives. Those who are not protected by a motor vehicle – pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists and people in wheelchairs – are particularly in jeopardy. A recent accident in which a wheelchair-bound man died led to the arrest of the driver for DUI.

Driver admitted to consuming alcohol before crash

A 53-year-old man was arrested after he crashed into a man who was in a motorized wheelchair. He was driving a Dodge Ram truck and the wheelchair-bound man was crossing the street. Emergency crews transported the wheelchair-bound man to the hospital. He died there. Law enforcement investigated the driver and found that he had bought a case of beer and vodka before the collision. He confessed to having consumed two beers earlier. They smelled alcohol and after field sobriety tests were given. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest.

DUI accidents can cause extensive problems

Being injured in a car crash or losing a loved one is never easy, but when it happens due to the recklessness and negligence of another, it can be worse. Simply crossing the street might be a dangerous act if there are drivers who are committing DUI on the road. For people who were hurt, there will inevitably be medical expenses, lost wages and the potential need for long-term care. This can impact their lives and the lives of their families. When there is a fatality, funeral costs and the emotional challenges that accompany an unexpected death will come to the forefront. A legal filing might help with covering the costs that will arise.
