Distractions during a morning commute

On Behalf of | Oct 23, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

If you commute to work, you likely travel the same route every day. This starts to feel very safe and secure, even though you technically know that it is dangerous. With 40,000 traffic deaths every year, any time that you spend on the road increases your risk.

One reason for these risks is that drivers get distracted. Let’s consider a few ways that this could happen during a morning commute and why another driver could cause an accidental injury.

A morning cup of coffee

For most Americans, nothing is more ritualistic than a morning cup of coffee. But drinking coffee in the car is a distraction. It takes one hand off of the wheel and takes your eyes off the road, and a spill could cause you to lose control of your vehicle.

Getting started on work

In some cases, people will actually start working while they’re in the car, driving to the office. They may try to read or answer emails. They may just be mentally distracted as they think about what they’re going to have to accomplish that day.

Personal grooming

Those who tend to leave the house a little bit later than they should may try to finish up daily tasks in the car. This could include personal grooming, such as shaving or applying makeup behind the wheel.

Listening to the radio

Finally, many drivers will listen to the radio, listen to music or simply listen to the news during their commute. This does make it a more enjoyable way to pass the time, but it can create serious issues when drivers get distracted by what they’re listening to.
