Many people suffer from dog bites. Oftentimes, these bites are sudden and unexpected, but they can

To ensure your safety around dogs, you may need to consider the following:

1. Be aware of your surroundings

Possibly one of the most important things you could do to prevent dog bites is to be aware of your surroundings. While it may sound simple, in practice, it can be a lot more difficult. Some dogs you may not notice until they’re right on you. But, if you see a dog in the distance, then you may want to stay away from their location.

2. Don’t pet a stranger’s dog

While it’s polite to ask a dog owner if you can pet their dogs, it doesn’t guarantee that they won’t bite. An owner may say that their dog is kind, but you can’t always know what’s going through the dog’s mind. If something startles the owner’s dog, it could suddenly bite.

3. Don’t engage with stray dogs

Whether the dog has a collar or not, it’s always smart to avoid stray dogs. You can’t be certain that a stray dog is friendly or has contracted a disease.

4. Don’t run from a dog

If you do encounter a loose dog, your first instinct is likely to run. You aren’t the only one to think like that. However, running away from a dog may only cause it to chase you and it may be difficult to outrun. Instead, you may need to consider keeping the dog within eyeshot and slowly walking away.

5. Carry dog repellent

One of the best ways to deal with a dog is to use some kind of repellent. A dog repellant can be quickly used on a dog to deter it from approaching you anymore. There are many kinds of animal repellent and some that are dog safe.

If you’ve suffered an injury after a dog attack, then you may need to understand your legal rights when recovering from your medical bills.
