Distracted driving the focus of a safety campaign this month

We live in an increasingly distracted world. To be sure, there are times when distraction is a good thing – like when tourists come to Las Vegas to get away from the cares of everyday life. But distraction can also be dangerous, especially behind the wheel.

Wrong-way driver killed in Nevada crash

Approximately 1 percent of all traffic fatalities in the United States that occur every year are the result of people driving in the wrong direction. It may be difficult to believe that such a bizarre circumstance could happen when roads and highways are clearly marked with signs advising drivers of the right direction to take. Nevertheless, between 2005 and 2015, there were 75 deaths that resulted from wrong-way crashes in Nevada, of which a total of 409 occurred during the 10-year period.

Why is the drunk driving crash rate in Nevada so high?

It is no secret that Nevada has an impaired driving problem, especially in Clark County. Between 2012 and 2016, 682 individuals were seriously injured in drunk driving accidents in Nevada. Another 396 lost their lives. In 2017, the Nevada Department of Transportation devised the Nevada Strategic Highway Safety Plan in an effort to reach zero drunk driving fatalities. To do so, the NDOT needs to thoroughly understand the who, where, when and why of drunk driving crashes, which the SHSP explores.

Facial injuries and car crashes

Some serious injuries that auto accident victims endure include back injuries, broken bones, spinal cord injuries and brain trauma, but there are many other ways in which motor vehicle wrecks can leave people hurt. For example, some people may suffer facial injuries, which can be difficult for multiple reasons. Not only can these accidents generate a lot of physical pain and discomfort, but they can also bring significant financial consequences (such as medical costs) and leave victims devastated due to disfigurement and scarring. For some people, such as actors and models, facial injuries can be particularly upsetting.
